In March 2007, Bill Volkert and his wife Connie spent a month traveling across Bolivia.  Their travels took them from the lowlands of Santa Cruz, at the edge of the chaco scrublands and rainforests of Amazonia to the High Andes of La Paz and Lake Titicaca.

Bill and Connie concentrated their birding on the highland Andean specialists, sighting 297 species, including several species that are restricted to only a single mountain valley or small region in the western portion of the country.

They visited the cloud forests of Amboro National Park, the semi-desert region of Samaipata and Sucre, the highlands above Cochabamba and the lowland jungle of Villa Tunari.  As they continued west they reached the altiplano region of Lake Uru Uru at 13,000 feet and followed the highlands on to La Paz and the south shore of Lake Titicaca, attaining altitudes of nearly 16,000 feet.

Bill Volkert is the wildlife educator and naturalist for Wisconsin DNR at Horicon Marsh where he has worked since 1984.
