Great Garlic Mustard Pull!
Saturday May 1, 9:30am-noon
Join us for an eventful morning as TogetherGreen volunters work to eradicate garlic mustard, a horribly invasive woodland weed, from Faville Woods. There are few times of the year more lovely for a visit to Faville Woods and we could certainly use your help as we continue to defend our native wildflowers from the threat of an encroaching invader! Meet along Hwy 89, 3 miles north of Lake Mills just south of Buddy's Prairie (N7710 Hwy 89).
Regular volunteer workparties at Faville Grove Sanctuary are held every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon through the end of May. We will meet at the parking area along Prairie Lane and walk or drive to our work site from there. Work locations will be posted on the kiosk for anyone who arrives late. Be sure to dress warmly in layers in clothes that can get dirty. Boots and work gloves are also important and make sure to bring something to drink and a snack if you wish.
We will be working on a variety of tasks this spring as the weather permits. Buring our prairies and savannas is a high priority for us and if conditions are right, we hope to be conducting burns. There is also plenty of garlic mustard to be pulled and we plan to be planting native hazelnut shrubs in the Lake Mills Ledge Savanna. Workparty activities will depend on the conditions of the day so make sure to call ahead if you want to know what we'll be doing.
Earlier Together Green Volunteer Days included:
Surveying populations of frogs, toads, and birds
Removing invasive weeds and brush
Collecting native prairie seeds
Planting 32 acres of wet prairie
TogetherGreen is an Audubon conservation initiative made possible by funding and assistance from Toyota.
In only 18 months since launching TogetherGreen Volunteer Days, 13,918 volunteers have participated in volunteer events nationwide, contributing 66,276 hours of donated time.
For Earth Day 2010, TogetherGreen volunteer events are being held at more than 30 participating Audubon sites in New York, Los Angeles, Columbus, San Antonio, Miami and numerous other cities.
TogetherGreen volunteer events are designed to connect people with ways to make a conservation difference in their local communities. By building stronger alliances with other local organizations, Audubon hopes to attract new and diverse volunteers to help address pressing environmental problems and opportunities.
